LAUSANNE, September 12, 2015 – As part of its National Championships held today at the Vidy Bowling Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, Swiss Bowling took the opportunity to officially support World Bowling’s initiative to have the sport included in the Olympic Games in 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. This new support is very important to World Bowling, as it is coming from one of the most dynamic and active national federations in Europe. It definitely constitutes another strong sign that the sport of bowling is gaining momentum in the last few weeks before a decision is made by the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee on which new sports will be included in the Games.

Xavier Ecoffey, Sport Director of Swiss Bowling, stated: “It is very important for us to provide all our support to World Bowling in their Olympic quest. Bowling is a highly competitive sport, but moreover it is a sport that is inclusive – we are gender-equal, we gather people from all ages and best of all we have huge numbers of participants every year. Every one of our young athletes here in Switzerland dream of being at the Olympics and represent our country. We hope that they will be able to do it in bowling. Swiss Bowling has an Olympic Dream!”

Megan Tidbury, PR and Marketing Director for World Bowling, who was present in Vidy, said: “The support from the Swiss federation is a vital backing for us. It adds to the support received earlier this week from the Middle Eastern nations and enhances the popularity of the campaign that we have seen across our 112 National Federations. We ran a great campaign to raise the awareness of our sport. The natural next step would be to become part of the Olympic family and we look forward to hearing the outcome.”

Bowling is one of the eight sports that made the shortlist for inclusion in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. The Japanese Organising Committee is set to render its decision by the end of September as to which sport will be included in the Olympic programme.
