ONES TO WATCH – James Stanley, Costa Rica
World Bowling has searched the globe to bring you the best up and coming young bowlers! In this five week series we will present our finest picks and those athletes that we predict will take the bowling world by storm!
This week’s “One to Watch” is the outstanding James Stanley from Costa Rica. At just 19 years old James has already had an exceptional career in both youth and adult divisions of the sport. James has had international success winning Silver and Bronze medals against the world’s toughest bowlers. He has been the Pan American Youth Champion and most recently, James represented Costa Rica in the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, where, as the youngest representative from the sport of bowling, he finished 10th overall amongst a tough field of the sport’s finest adult athletes.
James, how does it feel to be listed as one of World Bowling’s most influential young athletes?
It is truly an honor to be listed as one of the World Bowling’s most influential young athletes. There are so many great young bowlers around the world and I have no words to describe what I felt when I was told that I was one of the most influential.
At just 19, you have already travelled the world and represented Costa Rica numerous times in international tournaments. What does it feel like to represent your country doing the sport you love?
It is an honor to have the name of your country on your back. I still can’t describe the first time I sang the National Anthem of my country, but one can have an idea because I had tears coming out of my eyes. It is a great feeling to be able to bring home medals for your country and to be given the opportunity is truly a blessing.
What are your long term goals within the sport?
I will strive to continue representing my country at international tournaments. I also want to continue to be a role model for many kids around the world and inspire them to become athletes. Bowling has a bright future and I want to do as much as I can to help the younger players all around the world.
So what would you say to young bowlers who are interested in pursuing the sport?
It is a sport in which you get to travel around the world and meet amazing people. It will also develop you as an athlete and as a person. Sacrifices and discipline are required but it is worth it. Most importantly, enjoy every minute of it, especially because it is not an easy sport.
