Colombia Wins Team Gold, Singapore’s Cherie Tan Takes Masters Gold

SOUTH POINT BOWLING PLAZA, LAS VEGAS – Team Colombia, with members Anggie Ramirez, Clara Guerrero, Laura Plazas, Rocio Restrepo, Maria Rodriguez and Juliana Franco has reached their ultimate goal in winning the Team Gold Medal in the World Bowling Women’s Championships. They defeated Team Sweden in the final baker style match 2-1. Colombia won the first game by a single pin 205-204. Sweden took the second game 235-220, and in the deciding game, Colombia prevailed 222-202.
“We are extremely happy,” said Guerrero. “This is definitely one of our dreams. We have come close many times with bronze and silver, but this was our goal. We worked so hard as a team and when it came down to the final shots and we needed to strike we did it. We are just so happy it went our way and finally we are world champions.”
“This is delicious!” said Colombia Coach David Rivera. “It is the perfect ending for a great week and all of our great ladies are going home with a Gold medal. It just does not get any better than that”
“We worked very hard as a team for this victory,” said Restrepo. “We don’t get as much time to prepare as some others because we live in different countries, but we have a very strong team and it is great to win the gold for our families and for Colombia.”
This was the first Team Gold medal for Colombia in the World Bowling Women’s Championships. They won Silver in 1999, and Bronze in 2003, 2011 and 2017.
Team Sweden, with members Sandra Andersson, Josefin Hermansson, Cajsa Wegner, Anna Anersson, Jenny Wegner and Joline Persson Planefors took home Silver medals.
In the baker format, five player from the team alternate, with bowler number one rolling the first and sixth frame, bowler number two rolling in the second and seventh, and so on.
In Semi-Final matches, Team Sweden defeated Team Mexico 2-1 to advance to the finals, and Team Colombia defeated Team USA 2-1 to advance. Mexico and the United States earned Bronze medals.
Singapore’s Tan Earns Masters Gold Medal
Team Singapore’s Cherie Tan finished the 2019 World Bowling Women’s Championships on a high note by winning the final Masters event with a two game victory over Team Colombia’s Maria Rodriguez. Tan won by a narrow margin in the first game 203 – 201, but soared to a 258-217 win in the second game for the Gold Medal. Rodriguez earned the Silver medal.
“It means everything,” said Tan. “Everybody is trying to win. I have been so close many times, so it is great to finally win the gold. Everyone is tough so whoever finds it the fastest and executes shots will win. I thank my coaches and support staff for helping me come this far. They were behind me all week.
We were a little disappointed that we didn’t do better in team, but this helps a little.”
In the semi-final matches, Tan defeated Danielle McEwan of Team USA 2-1, and Rodriguez defeated Team Finland’s Sanna Pasanen 2-1. McEwan and Pasanen earned Bronze medals for their performance.
