USA Dominates Team Event Qualifying: Maria Rodriguez Tops All Events
LAS VEGAS, August 27 – For Team USA members Stefanie Johnson, Liz Kuhlkin, Danielle McEwan, Shannon O’Keefe, Missy Parkin and Jordan Richard the first three days of the World Bowling Women’s Championships has been very challenging . . . but Tuesday, they put together a dominating performance in the WWC 5-player Team Event.
In the morning block, the team averaged 225.9, rolling games of 1136, 1106, and 1147 to build a 143 pin lead over Team Colombia at the halfway point with a 3389 total. In the afternoon block, they remained solid and in control, increasing their lead by adding games of 1181, 1124 and 1056 for an outstanding 6750 six game total, tying the World Bowling Women’s Championship all-time six game record. Richard was substituted for Kuhlkin in the five player line up for the afternoon block.
“They just performed well and communicated really well,” said Team USA head coach Rod Ross. “They tied the world record for six games which is phenomenal, and did it with six players. We are very excited and looking forward to the matches when we will be going for the medals.”
“We played great today and stayed in the moment,” said O’Keefe. “I don’t think anyone ever looked at the scores . . . we just stayed focused on us. We had no idea about the record. That’s pretty awesome.”
Mexico, Sweden and Colombia completed the top four with scores of 6371, 6353 and 6341 for the six games. All four teams will compete in the Team Semi-Finals on Friday afternoon. In the first Semi-final match, Mexico will bowl against Sweden. Team USA will take on Colombia in the second Semi-Final. The two teams eliminated in the first match will win bronze medals, and the two winners will bowl each other for the silver and gold.
Maria Rodriguez Tops All Events
All-Events winners were also determined today. Maria Rodriguez won the gold medal with 5488 for 24 games. She rolled 1368 in the singles, 1377 in Doubles, 1389 in trios, and 1354 in the Team event for a 228.6 average.
“I don’t know what to say . . . it is just surreal. It feels great. It has been a long week,” said Rodriguez.
Joline Persson Planefors of Sweden won the silver medal with a 5425, and Shannon O’Keefe of Team USA took bronze with 5422.
On Wednesday, the top 24 from All-Events will compete in Masters competition. They will bowl three rounds of Masters match play starting at 9:00 am.
